Recount of Tommy Flower Petitions Due Yesterday; Hand Recount in Custer County Has Been Canceled
Yesterday, August 22, 2022, The Valley Beat reached out to Custer County Clerk and Recorder Kelley Camper, to get the latest on the recount effort and to get up-to-date information on all- things related to the 2022 election.
While election judges received training on how to conduct a hand recount, according to Camper, it has been canceled for now. A hand recount was requested by Mesa County Clerk and candidate for Secretary of State, Tina Peters. Peters has since filed a lawsuit against all county clerks in the state of Colorado, over the election results as she feels the election was stolen from her and she is the rightful nominee to face Jena Griswold, this November. Camper stated that after consulting with legal counsel, the recount is officially canceled. Due to December being the earliest date a recount could be conducted following the lawsuit, it would be a moot point to do one when the general election will be held on Tuesday, November 8.
We also asked Camper about how the voter registrations have changed over the last year. She said that, “I can tell you that currently we have 1,675 unaffiliated voters, which is 39% of our registered voters.” This appears to be a large number of independent voters in Custer County. This means that 61 percent of registered voters are Republican, Democrat, and other parties. What this means for the election this November, remains to be seen. One thing is certain, politics in Custer County is changing.
Folks on both sides of the recall of Tommy Flower debate have been waiting on pins and needles, wondering if the recount effort will succeed or fail. All petitions were due to Camper by yesterday, August 22, and at least 764 verified signatures were needed for it to move forward. We will report on Facebook and on the pages of TVB as soon as we have received word on the status.
Finally, I requested the upcoming dates and deadlines for the general election this November 8. “There is no affiliation deadline for the November Election. It’s not like the Primary Election where you must be affiliated with a certain party to vote. So, someone could actually come in on election day and change their affiliation and get the same ballot as everyone else,” stated Camper. “As far as timelines go, we have a LOT of different timelines.” Those deadlines are as follows:
Military and overseas ballots will go out September 23. Ballots for everyone else will be mailed out the week of October 17
The Voter Service and Polling Center will be open October 24 through November 8
Ballots have to be returned by November 8 at 7 p.m.

SilverWest AirFest
Last Saturday, August 20, 2022, aviation enthusiasts of all ages gathered at the SilverWest Airport in rural Westcliffe, for its annual Airfest.
Immediately following a delicious pancake breakfast, everyone enjoyed watching the small-engine aircraft fly-in and land. Folks were also able to speak with the pilots about their planes and get specifics on them.
This was a much-anticipated day, went off without a hitch, and it did not disappoint!
