Effects of Heat
At EMS we have been seeing more heat-related illnesses, which can compound reactions to the elevation. This includes our visitors and long-term community members. We would like to remind everyone that the very young and very old are at higher risk for heat reactions. Additionally, certain medications can cause you to be more sensitive to the heat or direct sun exposure, including diuretics, beta-blockers, psychotropics, and antihistamines. A lot of community residents take medications to control their blood pressure and many of these drugs are classified as beta-blockers, like Metoprolol and Atenolol. Diabetics also have a harder time regulating their temperature.
Most of us do not have A/C in our homes. Alternatives to cooling down can include cold showers, using cold washcloths on your neck or wrists, and enjoying frozen treats. Staying hydrated is an important factor to not developing a heat-related illness but be sure to drink more than plain water. We lose water and electrolytes as we sweat. To replace the electrolytes, try drinking coconut water, milk, fruit juices, smoothies, broth, or other beverages that contain electrolytes. Certain sports drinks contain an excess of sugar so check the label. During this increase of heat, check on your neighbors with pre-existing medical conditions who might be feeling the effects of this heat more and call for EMS if you see a major concern.
