Tip A Vet on Saturday April 15, 2023
On Saturday, April 15th, Willie Quinney of the locally famous Silver Cliff Mountain Inn will be serving his wonderful meals from 7am to 1:30pm and He & Cheryl have offered to dedicate all customers’ tips to Custer County Veterans. Veteran members of The American Legion Westcliffe Post 170 will be working from opening to closing providing customer service, bussing tables, refilling beverages and assisting the staff. Every dime of tips will go to support our Custer County Veterans/widows with home repairs & safety issues. Custer County has the highest percentage of Veterans in Colorado. Almost 22% of our county population is veterans. This is a huge opportunity for our community to make a difference. All tips collected are dedicated to direct support of our Veterans through our outreach program Veterans Assistance and Rehab (VA&R).

“The Why, Where, When, and How
to Recycle in Custer County”
Celebrate Earth Day at the West Custer County Library with Joanie Liebman and Deb Adams of High Country Recycling on Wednesday, April 19 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Community Room. Learn about the comprehensive, recycling program that supports individuals, business and governmental practices that reduces waste, promotes reuse, and advances recycling throughout the Wet Mountain Valley.
Joanie’s passion for recycling started shortly after she moved here and learned that the landfill has limited space and once filled, there will be no local landfill and trash costs will skyrocket. Deb believes reducing the amount of trash we throw away is a worthy endeavor. Learn about local recycling and join the effort to extend the life of the landfill. For more information, go to www.westcusterlibrary.org.

How Much Effort Do You Put Into Things?
Let’s talk about effort this week. How much effort do you put into things? If you want something bad enough you give it your all! You make it a priority, and when you do that, you usually see the results that you want.
Yet when it comes to improving your health very few give it their all. Most want the easy way to lose weight, the magic pill, the lose the weight quick then go back to your old ways of eating, we all know that doesn’t work.
We throw around excuses like “I don’t have the time.” I can’t give up (insert favorite food,) my spouse won’t eat healthy, I can’t afford it. We use every excuse in the book.
What would happen if we stopped making excuses? What would happen if we actually gave it our all like we do other things?? What if we made our health a priority? What if we stopped with the excuses and made the time, the time to meal prep, the time to make sure there is healthy food in the house? Maybe even the time to start working out?
The human body is really amazing and is capable of so much if you give it the nutrients and fuel that it needs to be amazing. Most of the time it is your mind that you need to overcome. The self- sabotage, the telling yourself that you can’t, not believing in yourself or giving yourself enough credit for what you are truly capable of.
Once you overcome the mental barrier you can achieve anything, however, that mental barrier is not always easy to overcome. Sometimes it is a traumatic event that we are hanging on to and letting dictate the rest of our life. We haven’t dealt with the trauma, we haven’t healed, so it is always there pulling us backwards, never letting us truly progress and move forward. Sometimes it is childhood trauma, sometimes it can be something more recent. We end up using food as a crutch, something to turn to comfort us, because we don’t know any other ways to deal with the trauma.
Sometimes, we just want to take the path of least resistance. It is easier to do nothing sometimes than it is to step out of our comfort zone and put the work in and make the change, or to confront something we are mentally struggling with head- on.
The truth of it though, the ball is in your court. You must be ready to make a change in your life. You must be ready to confront your demons head- on. You must want more and you must want a better quality of life. No one can help you until you are ready to help yourself. That is the bottom line. When you are willing to put the effort in, you will see change. When you want better for yourself, you will do what needs to be done. When you realize what is holding you back and what you must do to make the change, once and for all, when you are tired of repeating the cycle over and over, then it will be your time to take control of your life and improve it as only you can do. You may need assistance in that journey. Sometimes the struggle cannot be done alone, so never be afraid to ask for help. Just know that you are capable of anything you put your mind to!!
