Come Celebrate Pi Day at the Library - Tuesday, 3.14
The library is celebrating Pi Day March 14, aka 3.14. Remember pi from geometry? The area of a circle = pr2, and its circumference is 2pr? Pi (p) is an irrational number in that it can’t be expressed as the ratio of 2 integers, such as 22/7. Consequently, its decimal representation never ends (the most commonly used decimal is 3.1416), nor enters a permanently repeating pattern. It is also a transcendental number, meaning that it cannot be a solution of an equation involving only sums, products, powers, and integers. The transcendence of π implies that it is impossible to solve the ancient challenge of squaring the circle with a compass and straightedge. (Transcendence: you can meditate on pi. Ommmmmm!)
The library thinks this mysterious and transcendental number deserves celebration with . . .wait for it . . . pie! Who doesn’t like pie? The library is soliciting donations of all kinds of pies (dessert, pizza, any kind of circular pie); and then on March 14, slices of these pies will be available for sale to raise money for the library to buy outdoor equipment for public checkout. Think tents, camp stoves, and other types of useful outdoor stuff.
Sign up to donate a pie – homemade or purchased – and then come treat yourself to a slice at the library beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14 until sellout. Pie donations will be accepted at the library on Friday and Saturday March 10 & 11, and Tuesday morning of Pi Day itself before noon. Call the library at 719/783-9138 with any questions or to donate a pie. Or, sign up online at the library’s website: www.westcusterlibrary.org. (Do let the library know if you plan to donate so they can allocate fridge and freezer space.) Gluten free and other allergen friendly pies will be available.
Since we’re talking about the library’s website: did you know the library website offers access to a FREE legal information research center? FREE health information and research? FREE psychology and behavioral science research and information? These free resources are available starting at the library’s home page www.westcusterlibrary.org and from the top tool bar: Online Resources>EBSCO Research Databases and then choose the topic you want. (You can find additional topics at Online Resources>EBSCO Research Databases> EBSCOhost Research Databases. Don’t be fooled by the boring name EBSCO or database. There is a world of practical and useful information at those links. (Hint of things to come: home improvement and small engine repair databases.)
Finally, even if you’re not signed up for the adult Winter Reading Program (you’re missing great prizes and it’s not too late!), you can still attend upcoming programs at the library like Peaks Integrity’s How to Use Money Like a Tool (Tuesday March 15), or geologist Jay Temple’s program on Rare Earth Mineral Findings in Custer County (Tuesday March 21) at All Aboard Westcliffe. More information online or by calling the library at 719/783-9138.
