Keeping you informed on Custer County EMS Contributor Chloe Reinke and Steph Giebeig
EMTs and Paramedics both specialize in emergency medicine but what’s the difference? The terms are not interchangeable, and the qualifications are different. An EMT is the foundation of emergency care, and they take care of patients at a basic level. An EMT’s assessment skills, mainly the ability to determine the severity of a situation, are the backbone of their training. They are capable of starting IVs, giving some medications, and administering CPR. However, EMTs cannot give pain meds. The EMT class is 170 hours while the paramedic class is between 1200-1800 hours. A paramedic is the highest level of pre-hospital care offered in the US. They are required to go through two years of schooling, have previous experience as an EMT, and have a much wider scope of practice and skill set. A paramedic can intubate, perform needle decompression, cardioversion, can pace a heart, and give a wide range of medications for cardiac, respiratory, pain, and other conditions. EMTs and Paramedics are certified at both the state and national levels. They complete continuing education hours and must remain active in order to maintain their licensure. Since 2018, Custer County EMS has staffed one paramedic and one EMT to be at the ambulance base and ready for calls 24/7/365. Having a paramedic always on duty allows us to deliver advanced life support to the community and offer better patient outcomes. The EMTs and Paramedics work together to serve patients and provide high-quality emergency services to the county and surrounding areas.
