Cooking Competition
Congratulations to 5th grader London Skeen-Dean! London was the winner of the 3rd Bobcat Cooking Competition.
The monthly cooking events are open to students in Grades 5th-12th. The theme of this competition was "New Beginnings and Bright Colors". Competitors cooked in the school kitchen and prepared either an appetizer or dessert to be judged by a panel of judges.
Judges said of London's winning tart that any restaurant in Westcliffe would be honored to serve her dessert on their menu. Congratulations London and to all student competitors!

Tax Season is Fast Approaching...Help is Available
The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program and West Custer County Library will be sponsoring free individual income tax preparation on two Fridays and Saturdays: March 24, 25, 30, and April 1, 2023. Finally, we are reopening after COVID restrictions.
The service is available for any age and any income at the Library Community Room at 207 Main St. in Westcliffe. Slots are by appointment only. If you are unsure whether your taxes are in-scope for us, go to https://cotaxaide.org, and click on the left “Can we prepare your return?” For example, rental property is out of our scope.
To schedule, all the Custer County Welcome Center 719-480-7230 and press extension 5. Listen to the message and then leave your name and phone number and we will call you back,
Before coming to the appointment, stop by the West Custer or Canon City Libraries to pick up a required intake form or go to the website https://ta-nttc.tiny.us/Tax-Aide-Intake-Booklet and complete it. When you come in to have your taxes prepared, be sure to bring that form and Social Security cards for every person included in the return, driver’s license or other government-issued picture ID for yourself and your spouse, all your 2022 tax information, and a copy of your 2021 income tax returns, if possible. For a joint return, both you and your spouse must be present to approve and sign the return.
All of our counselors are certified through the IRS and AARP and are volunteers. We welcome anyone who would like to help us in this endeavor as a new volunteer.

Learn How to Make Sourdough Bread Simply!
Join Rachel Zeller on Thursday, February 16 at 10 a.m. at the All Aboard Westcliffe facility at 110 Rosita Ave., Westcliffe, Colorado.
This beginner's class will give you easy, step-by-step instructions to make great bread. The live demonstration will include starter and dough samples at various stages of the bread-making process. Plus, attendees will get to taste homemade sourdough bread at the end of the class! Please bring a small jar (and lid) if you want to take home some starter to make your own bread. Sourdough takes time to make, but it does not take much of YOUR time!
Rachel Zeller has been baking bread for 20 years and teaches various classes on traditional food techniques.

Music Meadows Event with Rancher Elin Ganschow
On Tuesday, January 31 at 10 a.m., Palmer Award- winning local rancher, Elin Ganschow will discuss ranching, land conservation, and the economic viability of selling food off- the- land directly to consumers.
Early on. she realized the benefits of grass fed-beef for the rancher, the land, and the ethical treatment of cattle. In 2007, Elin and her family permanently protected their 3,800- acre ranch from development with a conservation easement through the San Isabel Land Protection Trust. Today, the latest technology and science are utilized to grow better pasture by practicing managed grazing. She was doing grass-fed before grass-fed was cool way back in 1992. Join Elin in the Library’s Community Room.
