Welcome To The 18th Issue of Volume 2!
Election 2022
There is only one week left during the midterm election season and as many folks have expressed, the end can’t come soon enough. While I am not going to endorse a candidate or suggest how anyone should vote, I will say a few things to keep in mind prior to casting your ballot.
I have always loved politics. The love of news and politics began when I sat on my grandma’s knee and watched Walter Kronkite and debates between candidates on a little tv with rabbit ear antennas. I know it was partly due to the precious time I got to spend with my beloved grandmother, but I also enjoyed the excitement in hearing the issues. Yes, I was a nerd at a young age….LOL.
We have two real choices during this election and ultimately need to ask ourselves one question: Am I happy with the direction of our county, state, and country? If the answer is yes, I encourage you to consider voting for the incumbents and retain the judges. If your answer is no, I encourage you to vote for the challengers if they align with your beliefs and views. All the judges were appointed by Hickenlooper, Ritter, and Polis. I hope this helps with your choices.
Here is what you need to know about voting over the next week. Beginning Monday, October 24, 2022, folks had the opportunity to go by the county building located at 205 S. 6th St. in Westcliffe, to vote in-person on a voting machine, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, November 5 from 8 a.m. until noon. 24-hour ballot drop-off locations are as follows: the rear entrance of the county building located at 205 S. 6th St., and at the Wetmore Community Center located at 95 County Rd. 393, in Wetmore. If you wish to vote in-person on election day, next Tuesday, November 8, the polls are open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at the county courthouse.
For a sample ballot, please visit the county website at www.custercounty-co.gov. Click on the “Clerk and Recorder” link, or go by the Clerk’s office.
The choices are yours, fellow citizens. Don’t let anyone bully you or tell you whom to vote for, do your research, and VOTE your conscience! It is a right granted to each one of us and is a right that millions all around the world are denied.
We will have up-to-date coverage Election Night as soon as the results are announced on our Facebook page and via Twitter, and also, in the November 15 issue of The Valley Beat.

ELF (Education Legacy Fund) Donates Funds For Students Planned Trip to England
A group of 17 local high school students are traveling to England this summer! Students are gearing up for an educational tour of London and surrounding areas in what should be the trip of a lifetime. The group is traveling through Education First, a company that provides enriching travel experiences for students. Recently, Custer County's local Education Legacy Fund has generously donated $36,000 to the group, tremendously reducing the cost for families. The group would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to the community and especially ELF for the amazing support. If you or your business would like to donate to these students, please contact tour leader Heather Ramer at hlaramer@gmail.com.

The Wet Mountain Valley was in the Halloween spirit as many activities were on tap for holiday-goers, young and old, donned their best costume and headed out for a spooky good time. The following are the pooches and the awards they received.

Bronco- Awarded Best Friend and Tennis Ball Retriever.
Charlie- Awarded Best Snacker and Snuggler.
Joey- Awarded Most on Time and Best Guard Dog.
Jelly Bean- Awarded Best Eater.
Axel- Awarded Best Distracted.
Lily- Awarded Most Loving.
Fargo- Awarded Best Protector.
Piper- Nudist. Awarded Most Uninhibited.

The festivities continued Saturday evening for the Custer County Schools annual Halloween Carnival. Students in the upper grades were in charge of the various booths where happy children enthusiastically won prizes, including candy. As in previous years, there was a chili dinner fundraiser and costume contest beforehand. Fun was had by many families as it is an activity that everyone looks forward to attending.
The festivities concluded yesterday when the streets of Silver Cliff and Westcliffe were filled with ghosts, goblins, princesses, and witches excitedly screaming “Trick or Treat!” with their bags, buckets, or anything else that would hold all their candy treasures.
We hope everyone had a wonderful time and let us all look forward to the upcoming holiday season and have hearts full of gratitude for all our blessings!
