Welcome To The 53rd Issue of the Valley Beat!
Dear readers,
I am so proud of everything we have accomplished over the last year. With your help, we have
grown an idea into a thriving business. The Valley Beat came about after much encouragement
from friends, family, and readers of the Tribune.
We have had many growing pains and thank you all so much for sticking with us and for
renewing your subscriptions for another year. Please let us know what you enjoy, what you
would like to see, and any feedback you would like to give. We truly appreciate it. We want to
be THE source for news in the Wet Mountain Valley and will work hard to make that happen.
To our advertisers: THANK YOU for taking the chance on us. You ALL are so appreciated.
During the recent shutdown, we waived all advertising fees so that a bill from TVB was one last
thing you had on your plate. So many of you continued to advertise after businesses opened
back up and we are so grateful. Community means being there, always. We also put four weeks
of free issues online during that time, so that citizens would have accurate, up-to-date
information, news, and weather, at their fingertips.
In closing, I am so excited about where we are going. This venture is a dream I never knew I
had. Writing is my passion and so is this Valley. We will be doing a thankyou celebration after
the restrictions loosen. There will be food, music, and laughter without masks, very soon!
Please stay tuned for more information. When I can nail down a date and time, I will.
My office is located at 94 E. Main Street Suite D in Silver Cliff. Please be on the lookout for a
new sign that will be up within the next couple of weeks!! I can be reached via phone at 719-
315-6188 or email at: editor@thevalleybeat.net. If you would like to schedule a time to meet at
the office, I’d love to chat with you.
If you have story ideas, press releases, classifieds, letters, event information, please email or drop
by as well.
Cheers and blessings to you all and THANK YOU for an AMAZING YEAR!!

Be Bear aware in Bear Country!
We live in one of the most beautiful places in this great country. I think that is something in which we can all agree. With the beauty and solitude, we also need to remember that wildlife, including bears, are prevalent in the Wet Mountain Valley. TVB staff live in Bull Domingo Ranch and over the last week-and-a-half, we have had four different bear encounters. This is more than any of the previous 21 years that I have lived in my home. I have decided to share with all of you some tips that I have gathered from the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website. Whether you have lived in the Valley for 100 years or 100 minutes, I hope this helps us all remember how to live safely with these majestic creatures.
According to CPW, “Black is a species, not a color. In Colorado, many black bears are blonde, cinnamon, or brown. Over 90 percent of a bear’s natural diet is grasses, berries, fruits, nuts, and plants. The rest is primarily insects and scavenged carcasses. Black bears are naturally shy, and very wary of people and other unfamiliar things. Their normal response to any perceived danger is to run away. In Colorado, most bears are active from mid-March through early- November. When food sources dwindle they head for winter dens. With a nose that’s 100 times more sensitive than ours, a bear can literally smell food five- miles away. Bears are very smart, and have great memories — once they find food, they come back for more. During late- summer and early- fall, bears need to consume 20,000 calories a day to survive the winter hibernation without eating or drinking. Bears are not naturally nocturnal, but sometimes travel at night in hopes of avoiding humans.”
So, what can we do to keep these beasts wild while we co-exist with them? Because their sense of smell is so keen, it is super important to avoid leaving garbage or recyclable containers outside overnight. Bears will make short-order of your trash can and feast on whatever you have thrown away. They will also remember that they found food at your home or business and will return another time, for more. We had a cinnamon feast on the grease trap on our grill and then wash it down with half a bottle of margarita mix a week ago. He or she must have told his friends, because we have had more visits. If you don’t have any other alternative than to keep it inside, make sure you buy a bear-proof container, electric fence, or enclosure. It is also helpful to clean containers on a regular basis with ammonia or bleach. If you are going to be away-from-home, make sure you lock your doors and windows. If they gain excess to your home or vehicle, they are certain to be very destructive. Whatever you do, DO NOT FEED THEM!! We may feel sorry for them because they are hungry, but, it only does more harm to them and if they grow aggressive, you will get hurt or killed and then, they would be destroyed. DO NOT FEED THEM!!
We all enjoy gazing out the window and watching the various species of birds flying around. It is recommended that you do not feed the birds while bears are active. Again, that is mid-March- November. Bird feeders attract bears and they love to feast on what is in them. If you simply must feed the birds, make sure you hang the feeders at least 10-feet off the ground and at least 10-feet away from any places they can climb, to get to them. It is also vital to remember not to leave hulls on the ground under the feeder. There is also hulled bird seed you can buy.
If you do see a bear, do what you can to make loud noise. Never, ever approach or corner a bear.

National Night Out for this year, canceled; mark your calendars for Aug. 2021
Good Friday afternoon to everyone. If you haven't heard, you might want to go looking
for that umbrella you haven't needed in over two years. The forecast says we are going to
get a lot of rain over the next week. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
We wanted to let you know due to the current circumstances in the county and across
the state, it has become impossible and quite frankly, impractical, for the Sheriff's Office to
host National Night Out this year. The venue we typically use was closed off to us at 175
people, and if you have been to any of the events the last couple of years, you know we
have three times that many before the event starts. While we had hoped to be able to see all
of you at this fun event, circumstances simply dictate it can't occur this summer.
The great news is we are already planning ahead for next year and hope everyone can
join us then. Mark your calendar for August 3, 2021, and we will be ready to have a great
community event with you.
