COVID-19 Economic Support Program
Please note that this program has officially ended as of this week, as Federal Government
support and unemployment checks are scheduled to be deposited into the recipient’s bank
accounts this, or next week. We distributed over 500 $75 food gift cards during our three-week
program, serving more than 300 families in need.
For those of our community members still affected and without financial support, we have
moved the balance of the available cards to the Custer County Community Sharing Center for
distribution. Next distribution will be Friday, April 24th from 9:00 am - 11:00 am.
The usual rules still apply, you need local ID and be laid off, or out of work due to the virus
crisis.
Again, we thank all who have contributed so generously and we thank the team of volunteers
along with the Loan a Ranger staff for facilitating the past three Monday card handout events.

Parents and kids need breaks
To the side is the link for this week’s Mental Health Minute. These videos have reminders and tips for taking care of your behavioral health. In this week’s video Brandon talks about the challenges of working from home and having your kids doing school from home. These tips will be especially helpful now while we are physically distancing at home, however, these practices are good for your overall health and wellness all the time. To the right is the link for the video on our Youtube channel.
In addition, I’m including a graphic about our Support Groups we are offering via Zoom. These groups are free and open to any community member. There are a variety of topics such as grief, exercise, substance use/recovery, cooking and more. This graphic can be found on our Facebook page if you’d like to share. Let’s talk about how to safely wear and remove protective gear in order to stay healthy and not cross-contaminate
As we all know, government and health experts have expressed the need for persons out in
public to wear face masks and gloves. One source of frustration among the public is from those
that are aware of proper mask and glove usage and removal, yet are seeing improper use and
cross-contamination. Having worked in the medical field for 28 years, I have been schooled in
the correct usage, but many are not. So, this week TVB will use this forum to help put forward
safe practices, so we can all stay healthy.
It is important that you do not eat while wearing gloves. Do not touch your phone either. If
you are touching multiple surfaces, your gloves are contaminated and need to be changed. Also,
please remember before getting in your vehicle, please remove the gloves and sanitize your
hands until you can properly wash them. Another good tip is to sanitize or wipe the steering
wheel down, as well. The CDC has a wealth of information and videos on how to stay healthy
not only during the pandemic, but also during cold and flu season.

I have heard from several people lately that they miss having salads because they are afraid to go to the grocery store. I am not going to tell you to go to the grocery store, I am however, going to tell you that fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet.
Some people do not like salads. I think a salad a day is a good thing! I wanted to give you some ideas to make your salads more enjoyable and nutritious! Let's start with the base. I love adding mixed greens, a variety of lettuce, Maybe some spinach, baby kale, arugula, and some red cabbage, too. You can do the basic toppings, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, etc. Those are good, but get boring, don’t they? Let's think outside of the box! Don’t be afraid to add grains to your salad. Some quinoa, farro, or even a little brown rice to make it a little more filling! Roasted vegetables are also a good addition! Some roasted sweet potatoes, butternut squash, zucchini, tomatoes, corn, brussels sprouts. The possibilities are endless. They give a nice burst of flavor to your salad. Fresh fruit is great on a salad. Everything is delicious from blueberries on a bed of spinach with some feta and walnuts or orange slices with some chicken, almond slices and green onion, to apple, strawberries, kiwi, mango, and more are great additions, too. I prefer fresh fruit over dried fruit because it is easy to add too many calories with dried fruit like cranberries, etc. Also, they usually have added sugar. |
Add some crunch...like nuts, roasted chickpeas, or edamame, etc. Again, watch serving sizes and stay away from candied and salted nuts. Pumpkin and sunflower seeds are always good!
Protein from grilled chicken, ground beef, for a nice taco salad or use black beans to make it meat free. Eggs are also a good addition or fish like salmon or halibut, etc. are good, too. Crispy tofu or tempeh works too! I like adding peppers to mine, like jalapenos, banana peppers, or pepperoncini’s! Now, for the problems with salads. Stay away from croutons, they can add calories really fast! Also, stay away from store- bought dressings, as they usually have high sugar and sodium content and can add up to the same calories of a cheese burger really quick! A squeeze of lemon, some salsa, some plain yogurt mixed with some lemon, a drizzle of balsamic, puree some strawberries and add some balsamic and lime..there are tons of healthy dressing recipes available out there. Find something you like that will make you want to eat salads more. They are great to pack for lunch, great for dinner, and heck, if you want one for breakfast, go for it!! My favorite salad right now is a cheeseburger salad, with lettuce, egg, hamburger pickles, tomatoes, veggie burger, sauerkraut, carrots, avocado, and for a dressing, I use horseradish Dijon mustard. Don’t knock it till you try it, it is addicting! |
