Neighbors helping neighbors during difficult times

Dear Editor,

The COVID-19 Economic Support Committee is pleased to submit this interim report
to the community. During the two last Mondays we handed out over 300 $75 food gift
cards, serving 200 financially stressed local families suffering lay-offs and hardship on
account of the economic effect of the virus.
We are very pleased to report that the Ezulwini Foundation’s initial challenge to
match $25,000 of community donations has been met, allowing the committee to
continue this support program for the foreseeable future. We are awed by the incredible
response from the community in joining us to help those of our friends and neighbors in
need. We are also very grateful to Lowes Supermarket for their generous contribution of
an extra $2,500 of cards to add to our initial $25,000 purchase. Also, we send special
thanks to the volunteers manning the card handout tables.
We will once more be stationed outside the Loan A Ranger store next Monday from
9.00 am to 3.00 pm. Again, we remind applicants that only those adversely affected by
way of COVID-19 lay-off or self employed loss of work are eligible for this program.
The process to register and receive cards has been stepped up to fully comply with
current regulations to ensure optimum safety.
We are truly fortunate to live in this supportive community.

Everyone always wants to know the fast- and- easy way to lose weight and get healthy.  Well, here is your quick- and- easy guide on how not to be healthy!

Drinking your calories, aka Soda! Sugar- loaded (or chemical if you choose sugar- free) drinks void of any nutritional value, full of empty calories and more sugar than you need in a day. It feeds disease, and also fuels cravings for more of the same unhealthy food. Energy drinks, performance drinks and flavored coffees also fall under this category! Don’t waste calories on drinks!

Skipping meals. Not eating breakfast or even just eating one meal a day is a great way to slow down your metabolism and lead to binge eating of unhealthy foods! It also leads to mood swings and fatigue, you know, that afternoon nap you always need?

Eating processed foods, a lot.  Frozen boxed foods are a great example of processed food. A Marie Callendars entree, some Viola pasta, maybe even just a box of hamburger helper, or even worse, maybe even some frozen burritos. These frozen and boxed meals are full of sugar, salt, and preservatives. They are not healthy no matter what the package may say!! If it is a packaged meal, stay away from it!

Eating sugary foods.  You know, pop tarts for breakfast or a sugary cereal, these are are detrimental to your health.   Read the ingredients on a cereal box, even some of the ones that say healthy on them are packed full of sugar.  Maybe you grab a donut later in the day, and then a soda, and a couple pieces of candy!! We have had this sugar discussion before. It wreaks havoc on your metabolism along with increasing your risk of diabetes, leading to obesity, and feeding cancer cells.
Not eating a balanced diet.  If you don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, and eat too many refined carbs, it can harm your health.   Make sure you are eating fruits and vegetables!! (not frozen vegetables in sauces either, they are usually packed full of salt and sugar).

Staying sedentary.  Get yourself a fitbit, use an app on your phone, and make sure you are getting your 10,000 steps a day. If not, try to increase your steps daily and work up to it!! Move, Move, move!!

Smoking.  I don’t even have to go into this. You know it is bad for you. It destroys your health, costs a fortune, ages you prematurely, and makes you stink.  Not to mention it affects the health of those around you with secondhand smoke (even your pet!)..and yet you choose to do it?!?

Sometimes I am harsh, I know that, but sometimes people refuse to acknowledge what they know is the truth!

We have been handed a gift in one aspect right now. Use this time to take control of your health. Learn to cook, learn to meal prep, and start walking.  Please use this time to better yourself, and don’t turn to food to handle the stress. Comfort eating is a horrible thing that can lead to obesity and poor health and is not a comfort at all!!
