Letter to the Editor

Last week Colorado Governor, Jared Polis, held a press conference on what Colorado is now expected to do which includes restaurants and bars closing, distancing from others, and other means to help reduce the spread of the Coronavirus, the newest virus from Wuhan, China.  Colorado’s plan is similar to what several other states are doing and what Washington is recommending.   Polis did say at the end of the press conference that, “this is hard, coming from a business background”.  Speaking of himself coming from a business background he said he had two failed businesses, which implied that even from his background this situation is difficult.

I found this interesting to hear because President Trump has come from a business background, yet people expect him under these circumstances to wave a magical, perfectly presidential wand and make our nation run smoothly together under Washington, DC rule.  Most people have no knowledge of how many government and non-government agencies need to be involved and cooperating in decisions to unify under this attack on our health and  our nation.  A pandemic is serious and hard on everyone, even harder when the skeptics push the public panic button and blame a president who had no part in the regulations that made it harder for health and government agencies to unify.

Thankfully, we are a free nation and have a Constitutional-Republic Federation of states with leadership that does not rule over and dictate to the individual states as you would see in a Totalitarian, Facist, or Socialist form of government.  Those who are watching from the outside are speculating “experts” at pointing out everything they believe President Trump is doing incorrectly regarding this pandemic.   Health agencies and the CDC prepare for this type of health crisis ahead of time, yet even they would have liked to have been more prepared.  It is interesting that when President Trump did ban travel to China he was highly criticized for it!  I am thankful that he was thinking of the people he is assigned via election to protect.  Closing our borders helps.  Canada has closed their borders, now so has the EU.

It is no secret that China tried to downplay the initiation of the virus, attempted to stop any media about the spread and deaths, and attempted to stop the virus information from getting out of the country.    It has been decades since any U.S. President has faced a pandemic, which was 1918-1920 when Woodrow Wilson was President and the Spanish Flu infected 500 million people around the world, killing an estimated of 17 million to 50 million people, according to Wikipedia.  It seems no matter what President Trump suggests to the masses, people still point fingers and try to blame him for anything and everything.  We may or may not agree to quarantine as the President and his team have suggested and many states have followed; however this is a collective and personal response, no matter how healthy we think we are.

China is a different country, a different culture, a variety of food prep practices, food preferences, and cultural beliefs.  The “wet markets” in China and Asia are known for having caged animals (some we call pets), reptiles, fish, and larger animals.   Many are handled and processed without gloves and proper protective attire.  If anyone has a question about  Wuhan markets they should watch this video preferably not after you have eaten, nor with children.  Notice the complete and utter lack of any animal restriction for consumption and the lack of cleanliness at this particular market, yet a virus coming out of this should be no surprise to anyone, especially the CDC and the WHO who erroneously “declared the Wuhan virus a public health emergency” and slowed the call for a pandemic!

I propose that while our government is scrambling to hold us together economically with loss of income for airlines,  cruises, business owners, and on down the financial line; that we hold China responsible for their country’s negligence and lack of necessary restrictions that protect such a virus from happening in the first place, and from their attempts to hide this pandemic virus from the world and shirk their part.  Let’s move forward and work together to keep our country and our culture together, even if it means wearing a mask in public, washing your hands and maintaining a respectful distance.
