American Legion says thank you
Dear WMVCF and Contributors
This year, again, The American Legion Westcliffe Post 170 was allowed to participate in the
Spirit Campaign. A special THANK YOU to the Foundation for providing an opportunity for the community to participate both in donating and receiving their gifts. Post 170 received over $500 as our gift from the Campaign. This will allow us funds to send 2 boys to The American Legion Colorado Boys State Program held the end of May and beginning of June at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.
The cost to each Post is $200 per boy but the actual expense for a boy at this program is over $500. It includes a week on a college campus, food, board and costs of the program. The entire program is paid for by The American Legion. The boys and their families are NEVER asked to pay any of the expenses.
American Legion Boys State is a nationwide program provided by each state and is open to any boy that has completed his junior year of high and eligible to graduate the next year. Selection of boys is determined by application and the desire to attend. This program is among the most respected and selective educational program of government instruction for high school students in the nation. Boys are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and responsibilities of a franchised citizen. Training is objective and operated by the boys selected by their cities, counties and state. Boys State has been a national program since 1935 and Colorado’s has been conducted since 1949. Every year more than 20,000 boys participate nationwide.
Again, THANK YOU to everyone participating, allowing our Custer County boys, the opportunity to participate. Presentations will be held for the junior class during the February- March time frame, handing out brochures and additional information on applying and attending the Boys State program and the Girls State Program sponsored by the Auxiliary. (these are totally separate program).

We have our first month of the new year behind us. How is your progress going? Are you sticking to those new year’s resolutions or have they gone by the wayside already? Hopefully you have decided on a lifestyle change instead of a short term diet!!
How has the scale been for you? Are you seeing a drop in your weight? Are your clothes a little looser? Do you feel better? Do you have more energy, sleeping better? If you are still having difficulty or are not seeing the results that you want, ask yourself this: How is your nutrition? Are you putting forth the effort? One thing that I am seeing from a lot of people lately is that they are doing a great job all week long by eating healthy breakfasts and lunches and dinners and staying on track. Maybe even working out, too. Some are meal prepping and putting the effort in. Then, the weekend rolls around. Friday night out for pizza and drinks with friends, Saturday running errands, grabbing a 500- calorie Starbucks drink and then hitting the fast food drive- thru or skipping meals completely and going home and pigging out on whatever is within reach. Then, Sunday is here and it is time for your designated cheat meal, which turns into a cheat day...Sunday breakfast of unhealthy pancakes or biscuits and gravy, maybe some leftover pizza for lunch, then hey, “reward” yourself with some ice cream that night and maybe some more alcohol. |
Does this sound familiar? You have just self -sabotaged everything you did during the work week. Not good, huh? Then step on the scale and say “I have been eating healthy but it is just not working!!”
So how do you fix this? Pay attention to what you are eating. Want to go out for pizza, fine, have a piece of pizza, but have a salad first. Want a beer or a glass of wine? Okay! Moderation is key! Also, don’t take home leftovers (if you must, freeze them!!) Going to be out running errands? Have a healthy breakfast before you leave, make a coffee at the house and save yourself some money and calories. Pack a lunch or stop at a sit- down restaurant and make a healthy choice!! Also, you should always have healthy food at home to fix, eggs are an easy fix if you get home late and are hungry!! Sunday, same thing, a healthy breakfast and lunch, moderate cheat meal if you must, measure out a serving, yes, a measured serving, not a BOWL of ice cream, and call it good. A good rule of thumb is to never have your “cheat” at home. That way there are not left overs or a container of ice cream tempting you all the time!! Make sense? Don’t give up! You can do this! Just really be honest with yourself and how much effort that you are truly putting in if you are not seeing the results that you want!! |
