Do you know that food can cause inflammation? Some trigger foods can actually make your arthritis aches and pains, worse.
Certain foods can either promote or suppress inflammation in our bodies. By eating anti-inflammatory foods, such as leafy greens and colorful vegetables, and avoiding inflammatory foods, you may be able to ease arthritis pain and symptoms. Foods that can trigger inflammation are: Processed foods. Omega-6 fatty acids- (Corn, peanut, sunflower, safflower, and soy oils, as well as red meat) are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which are only healthy in small doses. Excessive omega-6 consumption can trigger inflammation. Foods that contain refined sugar—including pastries, chocolate, candy, soda, and even fruit juices—trigger the release of proteins in the body called cytokines, which cause inflammation. Sugar has many names to watch out for including corn syrup, fructose, sucrose, or maltose in the ingredient list. Fried foods. Refined Carbs MSG Cheese and high- fat dairy Hmm, now the question is, what should you eat? Fish. Omega 3 fatty acids help to fight inflammation. Try adding fish to your diet twice weekly Salmon, Mackerel and Tuna are also good choices! Not a fan of fish? You can try Tofu or Soy beans such as Mukimame or Edamame. They are high in Omega-3 fatty acids too. Fruit such as cherries, strawberries and berries are good additions. Cherries can even help with Gout. |
Low fat dairy, low fat cheeses, yogurts etc.
Broccoli...yep, ya gotta eat your broccoli!! Green tea is packed with healthy antioxidants that help reduce inflammation too! Have a cup of green tea a day. It’s perfect in this cold weather too. Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits and limes! Make sure to get that squeeze of lemon in your water! Whole grains..so go ahead and have that bowl of oatmeal in the morning! Beans, such as red beans, kidney beans and pinto beans! Garlic. Garlic is good for you not to mention good in everything, right? So get your garlic on! Nuts. Walnuts, pistachios and almonds. Just make sure to watch your portion sizes because the calories can add up really fast! Besides cleaning up your diet to help your arthritis you can also move more. I know sometimes you hurt and moving more is the last thing you want to do, but it is truly beneficial and will help with the pain! Stretching is also beneficial. Some other exercises to consider: Just get up and go for a walk! A 10- minute walk will do wonders for you!! Yoga, Pilates, using an exercise bike, treadmill, or swimming are great, too. Wanting to up your game? Pick up some weights! You can reduce the pain and inflammation that comes with arthritis. Do more than just “take a pill.” Take control of your health and your body will thank you! |
