Letter to the Editor: Legion Commander Speaks Of Sucessful Holiday Food Basket
Editor,
All I can say is WOW!!!! Today volunteers from Metro Ministries Denver, VFW, Legion
Post 170, ECV, CC Sheriff's Officers, all worked together to provide $40,000 of food, helping
those who are less fortunate have a great and blessed Thanksgiving.
The members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and E Clampus Vitus collected enough funds to
pay for the food and the turkeys and hams were donated. Food was trucked here from Denver by
The Metro Ministries. Those signing up worked thru the Veterans Service Office, John Carroll
and the Veterans Trust Fund, James Phelps who championed the event along with ECV. Coffee
from Tumbleweed Coffee Shop and the pastries and coffee condiments from the American
Legion so that the volunteers and attendees and others would have a hot beverage for the cool
morning. Volunteers and veterans assisted with the passing out of food items, keeping the tables
supplied and carrying food boxes to cars.
What a hugely successful event this was. I am PROUD to be a part of the veteran’s groups along
with the others that made this possible.
Today I saw what the REAL meaning of Thanksgiving and caring meant to Custer County.
THANK YOU, to everyone that helped make this so successful.

Holiday Survival Tips
Yes, it’s that time of year. Let the stress begin!! Time for family drama, overindulging, and parties galore. So how can you make it through the holidays without gaining 10 pounds, pulling your hair out and not getting arrested for assault at your family get together? First off, know your limitations and don’t be afraid to say no. You can’t do it all and you can’t please everyone. It is okay to say no!! Try not to schedule too much just to please everyone else. If you are dealing with blended or split –families, it can be extra hard. Lunch at one relatives, dinner at another, or one place one day and the other on another day. Not only do you have to worry about coordinating everything to try to keep everyone happy, then you have to eat two feasts. The number one thing to remember is do what is right for you. If you have to say no, then say no. Don’t do something that is going to make you miserable. The holidays are supposed to be a time to get together with those we care for. We get caught up in everyday life and don’t always have the time to visit and catch up with loved ones. This is what the day is about. Leave old quarrels, politics, and religion at the doors. How about starting a new tradition? After dinner sit down to a family game of Yahtzee, or if it’s nice, go for a walk as a family! Great way not to have that “I ate too much feeling” you get when sitting on the couch! Now let's address the food aspect. As a clean eating pescatarian, I know the struggles. First rule of thumb, If you are on a special/restricted diet and are not sure if there will be anything there for you to eat, make sure to bring a dish to pass that you can eat. What a great time to introduce others to a new way of eating too!! Explain to the hostess if needed, that you have restrictions so that they do not get offended if you don’t eat most of the food. |
After 10 years, my family pretty much knows that I am not going to eat the majority of the food and that I will always bring myself something to eat, or fill up before I go!! Even with all of the hustle and bustle of the holidays, make sure to have a healthy breakfast. If it is going to be a late meal it doesn’t hurt to have a healthy snack before you leave your house. Make sure to have your water bottle with you too. Staying hydrated will help you to not overindulge at the meal.
So when it comes to the meal, I am going to tell you this. If you do not have dietary restrictions, don’t sweat it. If you want it, eat it. One meal, one day is not going to ruin your hard work or make you gain ten pounds. It is ONE meal!! If you want to try multiple desserts, split with your spouse. You really don’t need 2 pieces of pie, so split them with someone. Take a bite or two of different things you want to try instead of huge servings. If you are diabetic however, don’t indulge in all the sweets and make yourself sick. It is not worth it!! Now, for the comments. You know, those family members that always have to say something about what you are not eating, etc. You will hear “oh, one bite won’t kill you,” and numerous other comments that are made to make them feel better about themselves, after all, they are not doing anything about their health. Ignore them. They are the ones with the issue, not you. Stick to your plan if that is what you choose to do. If not, it is one meal!! Someone may notice that you have lost weight and how good you look and feel, and they may want to know what you are doing to lose the weight. Feel free to talk to them about it, otherwise, I wouldn’t bring it up. Nobody wants to hear about nutrition on Thanksgiving. Now for the leftovers. Send them home with someone else or plan on freezing them. You don’t want to eat the feast for the next four days. That will derail you and lead to weight gain!! Don’t feel guilty if you overindulge. Remember that tomorrow is always a new day to get back on track. Enjoy yourself, enjoy time with friends and family, and wake up the next day ready to slay your goals!! You’ve got this!! |
